How to apply on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP): a step-by-step guide

Registration, documents, Aadhaar seeding, institute verification and common rejection reasons for NSP scholarships in India.

What the NSP is and who should use it

The National Scholarship Portal is the Government of India's single window for central, state and UGC/AICTE scholarship schemes. Instead of filling separate forms for each ministry, a student registers once and applies to every scheme they are eligible for from the same account.

It is mainly used by pre-matric (class 1–10), post-matric (class 11 to PhD) and merit-cum-means students. Many state schemes also route through it, so even if you are looking for a state award, check the NSP first.

Documents to keep ready before you start

Most failed applications fail because of documents, not eligibility. Scan everything as clear PDFs or JPGs before you open the form, and make sure the name is spelled the same way on every document.

  • Aadhaar card (or Aadhaar enrolment ID) and a mobile number linked to it
  • Bank account in the student's own name, seeded with Aadhaar for direct benefit transfer
  • Previous year marksheet
  • Income certificate issued by a competent authority for the current financial year
  • Caste or community certificate, if applying under a category scheme
  • Disability certificate, if applicable
  • Fee receipt and bonafide certificate from your current institution

Step-by-step application

1. One-time registration: create your account with your mobile number and Aadhaar details. You will receive an application ID — save it.

2. Fill the profile: personal details, academic details and bank details. Choose your institute carefully from the dropdown; the wrong institute is the most common reason an application never gets verified.

3. Pick schemes: the portal shows schemes based on your details. Apply only to schemes you clearly qualify for, because applying to overlapping schemes can lead to rejection.

4. Upload documents and submit before the deadline. After final submission most fields cannot be edited.

5. Institute verification: your college's nodal officer must verify the application. Follow up with your scholarship cell — unverified applications are not forwarded.

6. Track status from your dashboard until it shows the payment as processed.

Common rejection reasons and how to avoid them

Name mismatch between Aadhaar, bank account and marksheet; an expired income certificate; bank account not seeded for DBT; applying to two schemes from different ministries for the same year; and the institute not verifying in time. Check each of these before you submit.
